Ron Cook served in the Essex Police for 30 years, 24 years of which were with the Criminal Investigation Department specialising in the various aspects of crime scene investigation, rising to Detective Inspector – Crime Scene Manager for over 8 years. He was attached to the force fingerprint bureau where he qualified as a fingerprint expert and was responsible for setting up the chemical fingerprint enhancement laboratory. He has attended over 400 hundred crime scenes in the role as a crime scene practitioner and in crime scene management role. He was seconded to Metropolitan Police Forensic Science laboratory, liaising with the forensic scientists and senior investigating officers and crime scene investigators. Over his last eight years of service, Ron Cook was secretary to the then UK South East Region Fingerprint-Photographers-Scenes of Crime Officers Conference.
On completion of his police service Ron served a two year term with the Royal Cayman Islands Police in charge of the force fingerprint bureau and crime scene/ photographic section during which time he liaised with the various American law enforcement agencies over forensic matters.
For the past 12 years Ron Cook has worked as a Fingerprint and Crime Scene Consultant in the private sector. In 1999 was one of only two fingerprint/crime scene Consultants representing the public sector to participate in formulating an assessment process for the registration of fingerprint experts/crime scene examiner and fingerprint laboratory technicians to become a Registered Forensic Practitioners (RFP) with the then newly formed Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP). He subsequently served for 7 years as the Lead Fingerprint Assessor and as a member of their Incident Investigation Sector Assessment Panel.
Company achievements
For a number of years Ron Cook carried out the chemical fingerprint laboratory and identification work including training for the UK Royal Mail Investigators.
Ron provides lectures to the London South Bank University’s BSc and MSc Forensic Science degree courses and oversees and supervises research projects.
For the Metropolitan Police Ron Cook conducted the fingerprint forensic aspect of a £30 million fraud involving some 3,000 documents, 800 prints which resulted in over 42 people being successfully prosecuted.
