What is facial mapping?
Facial mapping, also referred to as facial imaging, refers to the systematic techniques used by scientists and experts to compare two or more facial images from differing sources to establish similarity and determine whether or not the images contain the same person. The facial images used for comparison often originate from CCTV and video but could also originate from:
- Artist composite
- Computerised facial images
- Computerised or artist's impression
- Post-mortem interpretation
Experience and expertise are required to ensure the effectiveness of facial mapping. DABS Forensic Ltd are fortunate to have leading facial mapping authority Ken Linge within or team of experts. Ken Linge has been actively involved in the development of the science of Forensic Facial Identification (Facial Mapping) and has contributed to the development of new and existing Facial Mapping techniques. Ken Linge been personally involved in over 400 cases in the past 14 years.
Three main comparison approaches are taken in the facial mapping process:
- Anthrometric (angles & distances of facial features)
- Morphological (categorising facial features based on type & shape)
- Video superimposition (Overlaying of images)
Whilst people are anatomically unique in other areas, facial mapping is predominantly used for identification because the face is one anatomical region often not covered by clothing.
